School Bus Safety Week in Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- This week is school bus safety week in Florida.

The state has launched a new website to help educate parents, kids and drivers about school bus safety laws.  And the theme for the week-'Stop on Red, Kids Ahead'-reminds drivers they must stop when a school bus flashes its red lights and extends its stop arms.

The riskiest part of the school bus ride to school is getting on and off the bus, according to Duval County Schools.

"This week is an excellent time to teach and reiterate to students and parents simple measures they can take while going to and from the bus stop, getting on and off the bus, and riding the bus," said Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals.  "It also gives us a chance to thank and honor the professionals who devote themselves to transporting our most precious cargo."

Main Street Bridge Closed for Hours Following Armored Truck Crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Main Street bridge was closed for three hours on Sunday due to an overturned truck on the bridge.

A Brink's truck overturned on the bridge around 10:30 a.m. and spilled diesel fuel on the bridge. The fire department cleaned that up to make it safe to reopen the bridge.

Two Brink's employees were transported to the hospital. The driver of the truck was wearing a seatbelt, but another employee was in the back of the truck and got tossed around during the accident. None of the injuries are life threatening.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.  It appears that the truck veered up on the curb of the bridge, hit one of the metal support beams, went up the beam a few feet and then overturned in the middle of the road. The right front of the truck was severely damaged and the right wheel came off the truck.

The bridge reopened at 1:35 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
