Nothing planned for tomorrow?  Looking for an activity?  Come to Elizabeth Swaim Memorial United Methodist Church in San Marco.  In honor of our anniversary, there will be something for everyone!

Bright and early, starting at 8AM, a special Farmers Market will be held in the parking lot.  The parking lot is located on the corner of Naldo and LaSalle in San Marco.  Everything from fresh produce to local honey to homemade crafts will be sold!

Then at 11AM move onto shopping in our ladies thrift store, Eve’s Closet.  Also at that time, local author Debra Webb Rogers will be holding a meet and greet and signing copies of her latest book on the neighborhood, titled “Images of America: San Marco.”

Our sanctuary will be open for prayer or reflection.  Come in, enjoy the air conditioning, rest awhile, and listen to the beautiful sounds of the Ensemble Group of Ortega.  A capella group that will knock your socks off!   And at 12 noon, come out to the lawn and help us plant a tree to commemorate our Anniversary!

You are invited to these FREE events!   They are all happening in honor of Swaim’s 125th anniversary.

Elizabeth Swaim Memorial United Methodist Church was founded on September 27, 1886.  At the time there was no church in South Jacksonville (now San Marco) nor were there any paved streets or electrics lights, and transportation was by horse and carriage, or more commonly on foot, as few families could afford the luxury of a horse and buggy. To attend religious services people had to cross the St. Johns River into the then small city of Jacksonville.  Crossing of the St. Johns river was done by a small ferry or by row boat.  It was during the summer of 1886 that a few families in South Jax who had been attending services at Trinity Church over in Jacksonville made the decision to organize a church on their side of the river.  The women were tired of getting their petticoats wet and pushed heavily for the men to do something about it!
