Duval County Emergency Management Earns National Reaccreditation

The City of Jacksonville/Duval County Emergency Management team has become one of the first local jurisdictions to earn its reaccreditation from the Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP). 

Jacksonville/Duval County was first granted accreditation in 2005, and at that time, was the first fully accredited local emergency management program in the nation.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the individuals who work hard each day to ensure that our disaster preparedness plans and response systems are ready to launch in the event of a natural or man-made incident,” said Chief Martin Senterfitt, Duval County Emergency Management.  “When you consider that we are achieving this milestone during one of the most challenging economic times in our city’s history, the recognition is even more significant.”

Accreditation is a means of demonstrating, through program assessment, documentation and on-site assessment by an independent team, that a program meets national standards. Accreditation is valid for five years from the date the EMAP Commission grants accreditation.  Accredited programs must maintain compliance with EMAP standards and be reassessed in five years to maintain accredited status.

“Achieving Emergency Management Reaccreditation represents a significant achievement for our department,” said Dr. Charles Moreland, Director/Fire Chief, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.  “While I am confident in the outstanding best practices the Emergency Management team develops and fosters to ensure the safety and security of our community, it is gratifying to see that their hard work is acknowledged at the national level.”

To achieve accreditation, local and state programs must document compliance with a set of national standards that address their disaster preparedness and response systems that are utilized in the accreditation process. In addition, the local and state programs must also undergo a peer-review assessment by EMAP trained assessors.

In addition to Jacksonville/Duval County, emergency preparedness and response systems of one other local program and two state governments were granted full accreditation. Pierce County, Wash., and the states of Michigan and Mississippi now have fully accredited emergency management programs, joining 24 other states and five local jurisdictions.
