Jax Cash Mob to celebrate 'Local Friday' instead of Black Friday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jax Cash Mob is renaming Black Friday "Local Friday" this year as they take to San Marco Square to encourage holiday shoppers to spend their dollars at a locally owned small business.

Cash mob members will meet up outside Maple Street Biscuit Company at 11 a.m. Friday.

That's where mobsters will find out the group's target store.  The idea is to have each member of the cash mob spend between $10 and $20 at the small business, according to a release from the group.

The release said studies have shown if each household were to spend $100 during holiday shopping at locally owned businesses instead of chain stores, the local economic impact would reach approximately $10 million.  The release cites a study called the AIBA Economic Impact cast study that took place in December 2002.

Jax Cash Mob co-founder Mike Field said, "Showing our support for our local entrepreneurs is especially important during the busy holiday shopping season.  Simply deciding to shop local first can have a tremendous impact on our local economy.  This city is our business, it's up to all of us to make it a place wroth calling home."

After the shopping, the group will meet back up at Maple Street Biscuit Company for lunch and socializing.
