SWAT callout ends peacefully

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office SWAT team peacefully resolved a situation Monday night in which a mentally ill man barricaded himself inside his residence.

Police were dispatched to a residence in the 8100 block of San Jose Manor Drive East just after 6:30 p.m. Monday on initial reports of a disturbance between neighbors and one of them had a weapon, according to JSO Lt. Jimmy Judge.

As soon as police arrived, Antonio Chavez, 49, doused himself in gasoline and locked himself inside his apartment, according to a JSO report.

SWAT negotiators tried to get Chavez to come out for nearly seven hours before sending a robotic camera inside the apartment.

Chavez was intoxicated and passed out inside the apartment and officers were able to take him out peacefully.

"There was no force used, no weapons were found inside," Judge said.

Chavez was Baker Acted and taken to Shands. There are no charges pending against Chavez, but he will need to see a psychiatrist at Shands under the Baker Act.
