Fallen Tree on San Jose Causes Crash | SLIDESHOW

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Severe weather overnight appears to have been the cause for a large tree falling, completely covering a local road and sending one man to the hospital.

The tree fell across San Jose Boulevard near the intersection with Saratoga Drive some time before 2:24 a.m.

That's when 911 calls alerted police to a crash in that same area.

According to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office detective Brian Blaquiere, a man, whose identity has not been released, apparently didn't see the tree covering the road until it was too late.

Blaquiere said there are skid marks on the road, but the driver hit the tree hard enough to cause serious injuries, and "mitigating circumstances with a brain issue," though Blaquiere wasn't clear what happened.  He said the man was taken to Baptist hospital and is talking.

Blaquiere said the tree was so large that police on one side couldn't see fire rescue officials on the other side when they arrived on the scene.

He estimated the size of the root ball at 8 to 9 feet.

The road was mostly clear of debris by 10 a.m.
