Water Splashing over San Marco Retaining Wall

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Water in San Marco already was splashing over the river wall, well before high tide.

Chief meteorologist Tim Deegan said a combination of factors has brought the river to the rim of the retaining wall.

A recent storm in central Florida -- the same storm that spawned a tornado on Fleming Island -- added more water to the watershed than the river can handle, and it has slowly been making its way downstream...toward Jacksonville.

As the high waters are heading into town, winds from the west are whipping up the waves, which are crashing into the wall in places like Riverfront Park.

The high tide will be in the area at 4:30 p.m., Deegan said, so more water could certainly come over the wall, though large-scale flooding is not expected.
